Jamie Carragher SLAMS Chelsea’s £2 billion squad after Bayern Munich deliver reality check
Last Updated on 18 September 2025
Chelsea were outplayed at the Allianz Arena by German champions, Bayern Munich, in a 3-1 loss during their opening Champions League fixture.
20 minutes into the Champions League tie, Trevoh Chalobah turned Michael Olise’s pass into his own goal to give Bayern the lead. Minutes later, Moises Caicedo brought down Harry Kane in the box. The referee awarded the penalty, which was converted by the former Spurs striker.
Cole Palmer halved the deficit only two minutes later with a well-taken finish. However, despite the Chelsea goal, it was the German side that kept pushing for a third.
Right after the hour mark, Harry Kane got his second. That came from a mistake from Malo Gusto as Chelsea slumped to their first defeat of the season.
Jamie Carragher rips Chelsea’s ownership for making squad ‘worse’ after spending billions
It’s safe to say that Carragher isn’t a huge fan of the way Todd Boehly has ran Chelsea since taking over from Roman Abramovich, having already slammed them countless times before.
His argument is fairly simple. Chelsea have spent way more than any club in the world. Yet for all their spending, they haven’t improved much on the pitch.
Carragher asked, “They haven’t got a squad better than the other teams in the Premier League – how is that possible when you’ve spent £2 billion?”
Mikel Arteta has spent half of that much, Arne Slot has spent close to £500m and both those managers are under a lot of pressure to deliver results. So, why isn’t Enzo Maresca?
There is an argument to be made about Chelsea winning the Club World Cup and their success in the UEFA Conference League. However, Carragher downplayed that, calling the Club World Cup a ‘Mickey Mouse’ trophy.
Chelsea face trip to Old Trafford next with a lot on the line for both managers
Despite an unbeaten start in the Premier League, Chelsea are now without a win in all competitions since the 30th of August.

Enzo Maresca and his men will hope to put things right when the Blues take on Manchester United on the weekend. It won’t be an easy task, given Ruben Amorim has a decent record against top six sides with United.
Both managers are under a lot of pressure with Ruben Amorim’s future quite literally in the balance. But Enzo Maresca will know it doesn’t take much time for the tide to turn. He will have critics on his back, too, if Chelsea’s results don’t pick up soon.
And the signs are ominous. According to Sportskeeda, Chelsea haven’t registered a win at Old Trafford in the league since 2013. So, it will take something big for that record to fall.
