Attila Szalai gave Hungary an early lead from Dominik Szoboszlai’s corner to get them off to a great start.

But, age is just a number, as Cristiano Ronaldo proved once again, scoring twice in the first half to put Portugal ahead.

Unfortunately for Portugal, their party was ruined in the last minute as Hungary equalized through Liverpool’s number 8.

The Liverpool star was in superb form throughout the game, assisting Hungary’s first goal from the corner.

He ran the show from midfield, creating three chances in total and being a constant thorn for Portugal to deal with.

Ultimately, it was Szoboszlai, who got a last gasp winner for his side. He smashed home from close range to delay Portugal’s qualification to the World Cup.

It was an important point for Hungary, too, who secured their first win of the World Cup Qualifiers only days before. This puts them on five points in second place, one ahead of Ireland, who they will face in the next international break in November.

Liverpool broke the bank to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer. Wirtz was expected to fight with Szoboszlai for the no.10 position.

However, the Hungarian has made himself indispensible with all-round performances to start the campaign. Szoboszlai filled in at right-back, putting in a great shift against Arsenal and also scoring the winner off a free-kick.

He’s filled in at central midfield, as well, while also being the only midfielder to play every single minute for Liverpool this season in the Champions League and the Premier League.

Szoboszlai’s been in excellent form for Hungary, too, scoring once and assisting twice in four World Cup qualifiers. And Arne Slot will hope his no.8 can bring that form against Manchester United on the weekend.
