Grimsby Town’s famous Carabao Cup shock against Manchester United is still making headlines.

The Mariners stunned Old Trafford by holding the Premier League giants to a 2-2 draw and then knocking them out on penalties.

But just when fans thought the fairy-tale couldn’t get any bigger, a new twist has emerged.

A ruling from the EFL has added unexpected drama to Grimsby’s incredible cup journey.

Grimsby fined £20,000 for ineligible player in Man United upset

Grimsby have been fined £20,000 after fielding midfielder Clarke Oduor in their Carabao Cup win over Manchester United. The loanee being registered one minute and 59 seconds after the 12:00 BST deadline.

The club self-reported the error, and the EFL confirmed the breach was not deliberate, with no intent to mislead. Half of the fine is suspended until the end of the season.

Manchester United not pushing for punishment or rematch

In a show of sportsmanship, the 13-time Premier League champions are not expected to challenge the result or push for a replay.

The EFL confirmed that the club have five working days to appeal the decision, but as per Daily Mail, have made it clear they have no plans to pursue further action.

That stance has been seen as a pragmatic move, with officials recognising the error was self-reported and not deliberate. Any attempt to overturn the result would likely have sparked more backlash given the nature of United’s defeat.

Ruben Amorim under a lot of early season scrutiny

Manchester United’s shock defeat wasn’t just a blow in the Carabao Cup — it’s sparked heavy criticism towards new boss Ruben Amorim.

Fans and pundits have been quick to highlight the scale of the embarrassment. United were only even in the second round because they finished 15th in the Premier League last season, a position that forced them to enter earlier than usual.

To make matters worse, the 2-2 draw and penalty shootout defeat marked United’s first ever loss to a League Two side in the competition’s history.

Amorim, who arrived with a reputation for tactical innovation, is already under pressure having the worst winrate since Sir Alex Ferguson retired. Can the Portuguese turn things around at Old Trafford or will the misery continue for the Red Devils?
