After snatching Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool, Real Madrid are using all their star power to stage another coup on Merseyside.

With international duty slamming the brakes on club football for a fortnight, it seems club managements have turned their attention to recruitment.

Real Madrid, in particular, are already weighing up their next big move ahead of the January transfer window in 2026. Apparently, Xabi Alonso wants to shore up his defense and knows exactly which player can do that for him.

Spanish news outlet Marca has linked Liverpool’s no.5, Ibrahima Konate, with a move to Real Madrid. The centerback’s contract runs out in the summer of 2026 and that’s why Los Blancos are firming up their interest in the 26-year-old.

In fact, they’ve turned to their biggest superstar, Kylian Mbappe, and have given the task of convincing Konate to the captain of the French national side.

It may have been a light-hearted comment from Konate but it barely brushes over the uncertainty surrounding his long-term future at Anfield. The two parties remain at the negotiation table but still apart in valuation, as per The Times.

Given how close Liverpool came to signing Marc Guehi on deadline day, is another indication of where contract talks with Konate are headed.

Liverpool need to do whatever it takes to keep Ibrahima Konate at Anfield

Despite reports that a decent offer is on the table for the French centerback, Liverpool cannot afford to lose another defender on a free to Real Madrid.

The 26-year-old made 42 appearances for Liverpool in a title-winning campaign. That was the first time since the 2018/19 season that Konate played that much in a single season, according to Transfermarkt.

There are no doubts over his defending. He’s always been a reliable option and now he’s entering his peak years. With injury concerns a thing of the past, Liverpool’s no. 5 could easily become the best defender in the world if he carries his upward trajectory.

For Liverpool, it will be a major loss seeing another asset leave for Real Madrid. That, too, on a free transfer.
