BREAKING: Ruben Amorim SACKED by Manchester United
Last Updated on 5 January 2026
Following Manchester United’s draw at Elland Road and a win record of under 40% saw Ruben Amorim’s reign come to an end on Monday morning.
Manchester United finished 15th in the Premier League in the 2024/25 campaign. They also lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur, failing to qualify for the Champions League.
However, the United hierarchy pulled the plug after giving Amorim another half a season to turn things around. But some believe it has more to do with what was going on behind the scenes.
Manchester United announce Ruben Amorim’s departure
The official announcement hit social media on Monday morning.
“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.”
Manchester United’s official statement also added, “The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future. Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday.”
As per many other sources, United are not expected to name a permanent manager until the summer of 2026.
What happened behind the scenes to see Ruben Amorim get the sack?
Up until recently, despite the pressure rising on the Portuguese manager, United were very defiant on wanting him to stay on.
However, after United’s draw against Leeds, Amorim let out a furious rant.
He was critical of the hierarchy saying, ““I’m gonna be Man United’s MANAGER, not coach. I was very clear”. “I am not going to quit, I am going to do my job until another guy is coming here to replace me, I came here to be the manager”.
Those with inside knowledge believe that these comments were the final straw in Amorim’s career as United manager. Club hierarchy, consisting of Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada, were furious with the comments and made the decision to part ways with Amorim.
Over the course of his reign as United manager, the 40-year-old managed 63 games in all competitions. He won 25, drawing 15 and losing 23. Amorim departs Old Trafford after 14 months in charge.
