There was no press conference. No carefully worded statement. No Ronaldo at a microphone carefully choosing his words.

Instead, standing outside BMO Field in Toronto ahead of Portugal’s Round of 32 clash with Croatia, his sister dropped the bombshell that Portuguese football has been dreading, and quietly expecting, for months.

World Cup 2026 could be Cristiano Ronaldo’s last tango at the international stage.

Katia Aveiro’s bombshell about Cristiano Ronaldo and what it means for Portugal’s hunt

Speaking to reporters outside BMO Field, Katia Aveiro said, as per BeIN: “From the information I have, he can say goodbye. Enjoy it while it lasts. It’s not today that he’s saying goodbye, but it’s soon. It’s ending soon. The info I have, from a reliable source, this is his last dance.”

Aveiro clarified she was speaking specifically about Ronaldo’s international career, he is expected to continue playing club football for Al Nassr beyond this tournament. However, the message was clear enough to send Fabrizio Romano breaking it immediately.

The announcement reframes everything about this tournament for Portugal. Every pass Ronaldo receives, every shot, every celebration, now carries the weight of finality. Roberto Martinez’s side are already in the knockouts, still capable of going deep if they find their form.

And the prospect of Ronaldo finally lifting the one trophy that has eluded him throughout an extraordinary two decades, the World Cup, gives this campaign a narrative power that no scriptwriter could manufacture.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s final dance is not surprising but still an earthquake

Let us be honest: this was not entirely unexpected. Ronaldo had already acknowledged that 2030 would be beyond him at 45, effectively confirming this as his final World Cup. The Georgina-Madalena Instagram saga exposed genuine tensions within the Portuguese camp.

The debate about whether Ronaldo’s presence holds back a young, technically magnificent squad, Joao Neves, Vitinha, Bruno Fernandes, has never been louder or more credible. He has scored twice so far, both vs Uzbekistan, after blanks against DR Congo & Colombia.

The question of whether Portugal are better with or without him has become impossible to ignore and after this World Cup, they will find out. Many believe the answer is yes, that a Ronaldo-free Portugal could challenge for major honours with such a talented and deep squad.

But none of that diminishes the magnitude of what Katia Aveiro just confirmed. Ronaldo started for Portugal in 2003! He has since broken every record the game has to offer. He has carried his nation on his back for decades. So, the curtain is coming down on an unbelievable career.
