‘We hope we can give him that haircut’ – Manchester United star drops hilarious message after win at Anfield
Last Updated on 20 October 2025
It had been nine long years since Manchester United last left Anfield with three points in their pocket. But on a dramatic Sunday night, the drought ended.
Harry Maguire’s towering header in the dying minutes sealed a 2–1 win over Liverpool, Manchester United’s first away victory at Anfield since 2016.
Bryan Mbeumo’s early opener had set the tone before Cody Gakpo leveled the score, only for Maguire to silence the Kop with his match-winning moment.
Two wins on the bounce for Ruben Amorim means that the belief is slowly returning, and a fanbase is daring to dream again.
Diogo Dalot reacts to viral fan’s haircut challenge after Liverpool win
Diogo Dalot delivered one of the more unexpected post-match soundbites of the season when asked about the viral story of supporter Frank Ilett.
The fan who hasn’t had a haircut since last October, vowing not to trim his afro until the club wins five straight matches.
Laughing as the question was put to him, Dalot told DAZN, “Let’s see… We hope that we can give him that haircut. But we have to go game by game. Obviously, we know this is a very difficult league, we have tough games.”
Ilett’s challenge began during the chaos of last season, as United stumbled through a turbulent campaign that saw Erik ten Hag sacked and Ruben Amorim take over. The hair grew with every defeat, a light-hearted protest that’s since become a cult storyline among fans.

Now, after a 2-0 win over Sunderland and the 2-1 triumph at Anfield, United are just three wins away from finally seeing Frank get his long-awaited trim.
Could the Anfield win be the turning point in Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United career?
Beyond the jokes and memes, the victory at Anfield feels different from a Manchester United perspective.
Amorim has been under remarkable pressure since taking over, but this win is the biggest, by far, of his managerial career.
The numbers tell their own story:
- 1) First back-to-back wins under Amorim
- 2) First away win at Anfield since 2016
- 3) Harry Maguire’s third goal of the season, underlining his resurgence
- 4) Improved defensive structure, conceding just one goal in two games
The question is, can United build on it? Fans have heard plenty of false dawns in recent years and there are no easy games in the Premier League.
However, with Brighton, Nottingham Forest, and Tottenham up next, Manchester United truly have the opportunity to turn this season around. And, most importantly, get their massive fan, Frank Ilett, a haircut.
