Anfield in shock as club legend hints at a return nobody saw coming
Last Updated on 20 October 2025
Anfield hasn’t felt this flat in a while. Liverpool’s fortress was breached by Manchester United for the first time in nine years, as Arne Slot’s side recorded a fourth consecutive loss.
An early goal from Bryan Mbeumo gave Manchester United the lead, while Cody Gakpo equalized in the second half.
However, it was late drama at Anfield, once again, as Harry Maguire headed home a famous winner.
It’s now four straight defeats in all competitions for Liverpool marking their worst run in 11 years. As frustration brews on the pitch, a familiar voice off it has reignited a flame fans thought had burned out forever.
Jurgen Klopp hints at shock Liverpool return
Jurgen Klopp, the man who restored Liverpool to the summit of English and European football, has left the door open for a sensational return.
Speaking on The Diary of a CEO podcast, Klopp admitted that a comeback to the Anfield dugout is “theoretically possible”.
“I said I will never coach another team in England,” Klopp told Steven Bartlett. “So that means if it’s then Liverpool… yeah. Theoretically it’s possible.”
The 58-year-old departed in 2024 after a glittering nine-year spell, winning the Premier League, Champions League, and turning the club into one of the most feared sides in Europe.

Since then, he’s stepped away from the touchline, taking on advisory roles at Red Bull and within the German Football League. But in his own words, the pull of Liverpool remains special.
Klopp said, “I’m 58 years old. From your perspective, it might seem old, but from another point of view, it’s not that old. That means I could make a decision in a few years. I don’t know.”
Arne Slot needs to fix Liverpool’s troubles or risk losing out to the man he succeeded at Anfield
Liverpool’s defeat to Manchester United was a terrible result but it was hardly a one-off. The reigning champions have been poor so far in the 2025/26 season.
Despite starting the campaign with successive wins, Liverpool have not looked convincing on the pitch.
Now, with the results also drying up, pressure is on Arne Slot to deliver after a superb debut season with Liverpool.
He also spent a record amount of money on transfers, signing big names like Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, and Hugo Ekitike. Unfortunately, despite all the signings, the team looks disjointed, which was evident in large parts during Sunday’s loss.
Historically the job of a Liverpool manager has offered security more often than not, but if results do not pick up, Slot could face the heat.
Especially now, with this new era of social media dominating news and in light of Jurgen Klopp’s latest comments, things could turn very quickly for the Dutchman.
