Jurgen Klopp sat down with Steven Bartlett on The Diary of a CEO in a long interview breaking down his entire career on the famous podcast.

The former Liverpool manager discussed everything from a possible return to coaching at Anfield to clearing the air about transfer spendings.

Amidst all that, Jurgen Klopp also took aim at a Liverpool official after news emerged over a possible internal feud during his time at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp slammed Michael Edwards over Darwin Nunez signing

During the last international break, James Pearce of The Athletic, revealed the details behind Michael Edwards’ departure during Klopp’s tenure.

According to Pearce, Edwards and Klopp disagreed on the Darwin Nunez signing. Apparently, the German pushed for it, even though it was not backed by data.

And now in his latest interview, Klopp has lifted the lid on what actually happened.

“Edwards is absolutely great at what he’s doing. But it was not on his day his job alone to bring in players,” said Klopp, further explaining that recruitment was not a one-man job.

He continued, “There were a lot of others like Julian Ward, Ian Graham, Barry Hunter… we were really close together. It’s not one sitting there and being a genius and producing ideas. Michael never did the job alone. I never did the job alone.”

Klopp explained that the process behind signing Nunez was exactly like every other signing made under his tenure. “You decide exactly like before, we decided it all together involved in that process and yes that’s how it is nowadays. We need a striker. We all signed him together.”

Jurgen Klopp admits Darwin Nunez signing did not work out

Darwin Nunez departed the club after three years at Anfield with Klopp admitting the club got that one wrong.

He said, “No problem to admit that it maybe didn’t work out as good as it could.”

The Uruguayan striker made over 140 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool netting 40 times and providing 22 assists. Nunez cost in excess of ÂŁ85 million which Klopp agrees was more than the club wanted to pay for him.

He was sold to Saudi outfit, Al Hilal, in the summer of 2025, for just under ÂŁ50 million, widely regarded as a flop by analysts and fans alike. However, Klopp explained that it was not all bad as he still fondly remembers Nunez’s brace against Newcastle in 2023.

“But without Darwin, so many things wouldn’t have happened. The biggest comeback of all times at Newcastle… oh I love that day.”
