Manchester United open talks to secure Kobbie Mainoo future after midfield shake-up
Last Updated on 22 January 2026
Manchester United’s midfield is entering another period of transition. Experience is heading out, wages are being trimmed, and long-term planning is finally coming into sharper focus at Old Trafford.
While recent headlines have centred on exits and cost-cutting, attention is quietly shifting toward protecting the club’s future rather than revisiting its past. It comes after Kobbie Mainoo was thrown out of rotation under former manager, Ruben Amorim.
And amid the uncertainty, Manchester United are now moving to lock down one of their most valuable young assets before questions over his role resurface.
Manchester United to open contract talks with Kobbie Mainoo
Manchester United are preparing to open formal negotiations with Kobbie Mainoo over a new contract. This comes following confirmation that Casemiro will leave the club at the end of the season.
According to Sky Sports, United have already made contact with Mainoo’s representatives, with talks expected to focus on improving his salary. The idea is to bring him in line with senior first-team players as he is currently believed to be among the lowest-paid members.
Mainoo’s situation this season has been far from straightforward. Under Ruben Amorim, he made just one start before the Portuguese coach was dismissed earlier this month. His limited role even prompted a request for a loan move away from Old Trafford.
Since Amorim’s departure, however, Mainoo’s fortunes have shifted. He has been reintegrated into the squad and started United’s last two matches.
Why Mainoo’s role is set to grow under Michael Carrick
Mainoo’s resurgence has coincided with Michael Carrick stepping in as caretaker head coach. The former United midfielder has shown immediate faith in the academy graduate, selecting him to start alongside Casemiro in last weekend’s Manchester derby.
That decision paid off as Mainoo delivered a composed and authoritative midfield display. United secured a 2–0 victory owing to a Michael Carrick masterclass. And, as a result, fans feel vindicated after the 20-year-old was banished to the sidelines under Ruben Amorim.
Manchester United are keen to reshape their wage structure following Casemiro’s pending exit. Securing Mainoo’s long-term future would represent both a financial statement and a footballing one.
