Manchester United confirm Casemiro exit decision as contract nears expiry
Last Updated on 22 January 2026
Casemiro’s time at Manchester United has always felt like a short-term fix wrapped in long-term consequences. Signed at a moment of urgency, he arrived with pedigree, authority, and a price tag that reflected both.
For a while, the gamble worked. Silverware followed, standards were raised, and Manchester United finally looked like a side with steel in midfield again.
But football moves quickly at Old Trafford. And as the club enters another reset, one of the most expensive symbols of the past era is edging toward the exit door.
Manchester United decide against extending Casemiro’s contract
Manchester United have confirmed that Casemiro will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season. While there had been outside speculation over whether United would activate a one-year extension, BBC Sport sources insist there was never any internal doubt.
Signed from Real Madrid for £70m in 2022, Casemiro went on to make 146 appearances, memorably scoring in the 2023 Carabao Cup final as United finished third in the Premier League.
However, his £375,000-a-week salary became a focal point of criticism after the arrival of new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Ratcliffe has repeatedly highlighted inflated wages as part of the financial excesses he is determined to undo.
Extending Casemiro’s deal was never considered compatible with that vision, and the decision not to trigger the option was made well in advance of the club’s public announcement. Despite the uncertainty, Casemiro is intent on creating “many more memories” until the end.
Meanwhile, the Brazilian has been tipped as a major target for Saudi clubs and others in Europe, like other footballers on expiring contracts.
How Casemiro became a symbol of United’s past transfer mistakes
Casemiro’s arrival was born out of necessity rather than strategy. Under Erik ten Hag, United had failed to land primary midfield targets such as Frenkie de Jong and Declan Rice, prompting a late pivot to experience and authority.
Initially, the move was justified. But his second season told a different story, as form dipped and questions grew louder. After a heavy defeat at Crystal Palace, criticism intensified, with Jamie Carragher delivering a brutal assessment on Sky Sports.
Yet Casemiro’s professionalism ensured his story did not end in bitterness. Unable to secure a move due to his wages, he stayed, worked, and re-established himself as a respected figure. As United look to shake things up with new arrivals planned, this was not a story full of regret.
