5 managers Liverpool could appoint if Arne Slot is sacked

Nottingham Forest’s 3-0 win at Anfield means Liverpool have lost 8 of their last 11 matches in all competitions, this season.

This includes six losses in their last seven Premier League matches, including two at Anfield. Naturally any side going through that kind of form comes under massive pressure and the current champions are under significant scrutiny.

According to some reports, the Liverpool hierarchy are weighing up their options, in case they do need to sack Arne Slot. Here are some of the names in consideration to take over at Anfield.

5 – Zinedine Zidane

Without a job since he left Real Madrid after a second stint in 2021, it’s no secret that Zinedine Zidane is holding out for the France national team job.

However, he has also praised Liverpool’s stadium, Anfield as the best he ever played at. He has also mentioned how he will only take a managerial vacancy if he feels it’s the best role for him.

With Liverpool spending like the Galacticos in the summer of 2025, Zidane might be the right option to manager a squad full of big names.

4 – Xabi Alonso

This might be the most surprising name on the list, as Xabi Alonso is currently managing his dream team in Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.

But, the Spaniard has come under a lot of criticism recently, with fans turning on him following his rumoured fall-out with Vinicius Junior. As per the Echo, that if Alonso does not deliver results, as is the expectation at all times at the Bernabeu, he could be on his way out.

If that happens, at some point, this season, Liverpool could make the necessary adjustments to bring Xabi to Anfield.

3 – Oliver Glasner

A team lacking in ideas and hitting a dead end needs a manager to breath life into it. That is where Crystal Palace were, when they hired Glasner in 2024, helping them win their first ever trophy with the FA Cup in 2025.

The Austrian did the same in his previous assignment with Eintracht Frankfurt winning the UEFA Europa League in 2022. A serial winner, Glasner seems like the most obvious candidate, given his fantastic resume and his significant experience.

Slot came with a similar winning record but he does not have a huge body of work. Glasner could have a Klopp-like effect on Liverpool given his brand of football is close to the German.

2 – Andoni Iraola

If Liverpool have a wishlist of managers to replace Arne Slot, there’s a great chance that Andoni Iraola is on it.

Iraola’s been one of the most impressive managers in the Premier League since his arrival from Rayo Vallecano in 2023. Not to forget, it was Liverpool’s current director of football, Richard Hughes, who was instrumental in bringing Iraola to the South Coast.

With Liverpool signing Milos Kerkez and being interested in Antoine Semenyo, as well, it might be a no-brainer to bring the guy who brought the best out of that duo, too.

1 – Jurgen Klopp

Still the odds-on candidate, Jurgen Klopp vowed to never manage a different club in the Premier League.

In fact, he mentioned how you cannot simply take a break and then ask to come back in management, to the same club. Klopp felt burned out, when he left Liverpool, and has been enjoying in his new role as Head of Global Soccer for Red Bull.

But, he recently talked about how he has not ruled out a move back to Anfield. It’s hard to see the German turning down an approach from Anfield, if Arne Slot is let go. One thing is for sure, Anfield will definitely get behind Klopp if he were to emerge as a candidate.
