5 fan-favourite footballers who are overrated – Time to break some hearts!
Last Updated on 25 November 2025
Every fanbase has that player who’s loved for flair, charm, or a few unforgettable moments but whose actual contribution on the pitch might not live up to the hype.
League, popularity doesn’t always equal performance. But fans don’t really care about that, they are hell-bent on defending their favorites.
Here are five fan-favourite footballers who are overrated.
5 – Gabriel Martinelli (Arsenal)
Once hailed as an ‘outstanding’ player and tipped to be the next big thing by Jurgen Klopp, Martinelli’s career has hit a deadend, recently.
His career best season in the Premier League came during the 2022/23 campaign when the Brazilian scored 15 goals, assisting a further 6. Unfortunately, in the next two Premier League campaigns and the current ongoing one, Martinelli has only matched his tally from that one season.
Still a fan-favorite in North London, the 24-year-old is quite young and can get his career back on track. However, it has to happen soon given how cut-throat the competition is in the Premier League and at Arsenal, after all the signings they made recently. And, he knows it!
4 – Emiliano Martinez (Aston Villa)
The two-time winner of the Yashin tropy, Emiliano ‘Dibu’ Martinez, is overrated? Well, hear us out.
Martinez’s save against Randal Kolo Muani in stoppage time might be the biggest moment in football over the last decade or so.
And, of course, winning a World Cup is as big as it gets. But Martinez is prone to making too many mistakes, which is definitely not a good trait for a goalkeeper.
In recent seasons, he’s been getting punished for those mistakes and that’s the reason why Villa put him up for sale in the summer of 2025. Somehow, no club in England or beyond put in a bid with even Manchester United opting for Senne Lammens over Martinez, as per BBC.
Most Villa fans still believe Dibu is fantastic but most analysts will tell you that the Argentine does not make the top five goalkeepers in the Premier League.
3 – Richarlison (Tottenham Hotspur)
One of the best wind-up merchants in the Premier League, Richarlison is a true fan favorite.
When it comes to getting the worst out of the opposition and being a nuisance, there’s no one better than Richarlison. Unfortunately, he gets paid for being a striker and he does not usually score enough to justify the money each team has paid for him so far.

He has never scored more than 13 goals in a single Premier League campaign. In fact, Richarlison only has 21 goals in 82 appearances for Tottenham. Given how he was signed for a club-record fee by Spurs, north of £60 million, that is a poor return.
2 – Enzo Fernandez (Chelsea)
Chelsea signed Enzo Fernandez for £107 million from Benfica. He has been a solid presence in the Blues’ midfield but has he justified his price tag? Well, that depends on who you ask.
For most Chelsea fans, he has. Still only 24, Enzo has time on his side but he has yet to establish himself as one of the best midfielders in the league.

For instance, Moises Caicedo joined Chelsea for a higher fee than Enzo but he has been a true hit. The Ecuadorian is gifted at winning the ball, takes care of it well in possession and can score big goals, too. For what it’s worth, Enzo does score goals on a rather consistent basis.
Enzo, on the other hand, is often anonymous and doesn’t offer much if not paired alongside Caicedo.
1 – Marcus Rashford (FC Barcelona – Manchester United)
Marcus Rashford is the perfect example of a fan-favorite overrated footballer. Around four years ago, Rashford was in the same conversations as Kylian Mbappe. In fact, for many, Rashford was more talented and offered more than the Frenchman.
No one says that anymore.
Rashford was always a big talent but fans of other clubs would argue that his inconsistency was always downplayed. Despite spending more than 10 years in the Premier League, Rashford has never scored more than 17 league goals.
Aston Villa had the chance to sign the 28-year-old on a permanent deal but they passed the opportunity. Rashford still managed to make a big move to Barcelona, on loan. But apart from a few goals, he has not really impressed on a consistent basis.
