Xabi Alonso asks Real Madrid to keep close eye on another ‘top’ Liverpool player after slow start
Last Updated on 6 October 2025
Real Madrid have historically kept a close eye on the Premier League and, more recently, on Liverpool players for strengthening their squad.
And as per reports, Real Madrid have outlined a new target at Anfield after convincing Trent Alexander-Arnold to make the move from Merseyside to Spain.
Xabi Alonso is a huge admirer of Liverpool’s £116m superstar from Bayer Leverkusen, Florian Wirtz, and has urged the club to keep an eye on the German.
Xabi Alonso wants Liverpool’s Florian Wirtz to bolster his attacking options
Florian Wirtz has endured a tough start to his Liverpool career, not registering a goal or assist in nine appearances across the Champions League and the Premier League.
As a result, pundits have started the young German’s ability to adapt to the Premier League’s intensity. Gary Neville was among the most outspoken critics, claiming Wirtz has yet to show the spark that made him one of Europe’s most coveted young players.
According to Defensa Central, Xabi Alonso is closely watching the situation. Alonso, who worked with Wirtz during his breakthrough at Bayer Leverkusen, is said to believe the midfielder could bring “another level of quality” to his current squad.

If Wirtz’s struggles continue, Madrid could revisit their long-standing interest next summer. Alonso is convinced that with the right confidence, the 21-year-old could flourish. He knows better than most what the player can offer and can get the best out of him.
Kylian Mbappe ‘enjoys watching’ Florian Wirtz play
Xabi Alonso is not the only admirer of the Liverpool midfielder at Real Madrid. If the club were to make a move for the German talent, he will have Kylian Mbappe’s seal of approval.
Speaking on international duty, Liverpool.com reported on Mbappe’s admiration for Wirtz. “He is a top talent and I think Germany can consider itself lucky to have a player like him.” Mbappe said. “I like him and I enjoy watching him play.”
In March 2024, Wirtz scored Germany’s fastest ever goal against France, netting inside 8 seconds. That is when Mbappe took notice of Wirtz and it’s hardly a surprise that the Frenchman enjoys watching him play.
