The Premier League has always been a stage for heroes. Some who dominate for years, and others who blaze briefly but brightly, leaving memories that never fade.

These are the players who, for one magical season, looked unstoppable, before fading into football folklore.

Here are some meteors who lit up the Premier League before vanishing just as quickly…

5 – Roque Santa Cruz – (2007/08, Blackburn Rovers)

Signed from Bayern Munich, Roque Santa Cruz hit 19 goals in his debut season at Ewood Park.

Elegant, composed, and clinical, he seemed destined to become one of the league’s top forwards.

But injuries and poor form derailed his career. A big-money move to Manchester City followed, but he never replicated that golden year. However, one season was all it took to cement his name in Premier League nostalgia.

4 – Amr Zaki – (2008/09 Wigan Athletic)

Before Mo Salah lit up Anfield with his consistent performances, there was another Egyptian who smashed a memorable overhead goal at Anfield.

Amr Zaki, for a few months, looked so much like Didier Drogba. He bullied defenders, scored screamers, and sat joint-top of the scoring charts by Christmas.

But after a series of disciplinary issues and a dramatic drop in form, Zaki’s fairy tale collapsed as quickly as it began. His manager, Steve Bruce, famously called him “the most unprofessional player I’ve ever worked with.”

Still, those first few months? Electric!

3 – Benni McCarthy (2006-07 Blackburn Rovers)

There’s a reason Ewood Park and Blackburn Rovers are very much the definition of Barclays nostalgia.

They produced these one-season wonders for fun and Benni McCarthy in that 2006-07 season was truly unstoppable. In fact, as per Squawka, in that season alone, McCarthy scored 18 goals, one more than a certain Cristiano Ronaldo.

But, like every other player on the list, things went downhill for the South African from there on out. He could not replicate that form at West Ham United or even with Orlando Pirates, eventually hanging up his boots and seeking a career in managing.

That didn’t turn out too well, either, as McCarthy was sacked after only two wins from 18 games in charge of Cape Town City FC.

2 – Papiss Cisse (2011-12 Newcastle United)

Similar to Zaki’s banger at Anfield, Papiss Cisse’s spectacular ‘banana’ goal from outside the box against Chelsea lit up the Premier League.

But that outside the boot finish wasn’t the only goal he scored. Cisse racked up 13 goals in 14 games for the Magpies drawing comparisons to other all-time greats.

Unfortunately for the Senegalese, he could not find that magic again, faltering with only eight goals the following campaign.

1 – Michu (2012-13 Swansea City)

As far as one-season wonders go, it’s hard to pick someone better suited to that moniker than Michu.

Signed for just £2 million from Rayo Vallecano, Michu arrived in the Premier League with a bang. That iconic celebration, goals every week, in fact, so many that he outscored the likes of Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez and Luis Suarez in his debut campaign.

Michu became an instant hero but injuries and inconsistency caught up fast and the decision makers at Swansea must kick themselves for not taking the £20m for the Spanish.

Conclusion: The beauty of the brief spark

Football’s legends are remembered for longevity but its cult heroes are remembered for their moments.

The Premier League’s one-season wonders remind us that magic doesn’t have to last forever, even one bright spark can be enough to sustain a legacy.
