Pep Guardiola looking to break two-year drought against Liverpool in milestone game
Last Updated on 8 November 2025
The Citizens host the champions and arch-nemesis, Liverpool, at the Etihad on Sunday with both sides seeking to cut the gap on Arsenal.
Manchester City sit second in the Premier League, after 10 games, this season, a point ahead of Liverpool but six behind pace-setters Arsenal.
Liverpool, on the other hand, have put together back-to-back wins after losing six of their previous seven in all competitions.
Manchester City winless against Liverpool since 2023 – Pep to manage 1000th game of his career
From a Manchester City point of view, this is a massive game for more than one reason. The Blues have a fantastic chance of getting their first win over Liverpool since their 4-1 win in April 2023.

Both games from the 2024/25 season ended in a 2-0 win for Liverpool with Arne Slot getting the better of Guardiola on consecutive occasions.
Before that, in Jurgen Klopp’s final campaign, the sides played out two 1-1 draws.
For Guardiola, this will be the 1000th game of his glittering managerial career, as well, and 550th in charge of Manchester City.
As per Goal.com, speaking ahead of the game, the Spaniard was full of praise. “If I would have to choose one rival for this personal milestone, that (Liverpool) would be the best!”
Erling Haaland key for City – Liverpool look to build on recent form
Unsurprisingly, the biggest weapon for Guardiola ahead of this clash is his no.9, Erling Braut Haaland.
The Norwegian has been in scary form, scoring 18 times already this season in only 14 matches for City. Although, his record against Liverpool isn’t great since he joined the Blues, scoring only twice in six appearances in all competitions.
Meanwhile, Liverpool’s talisman, Mohamed Salah is on the brink of having the most goal involvements for a single Premier League club. Having equalled Wayne Rooney’s record of 276, Salah needs a goal or an assist to break it.
Both sides have had mixed starts to the season but both clubs come into this one with a bit of momentum. City have won three games in all competitions, while Liverpool have won two on the bounce.
It’s all set up for a cracker on Super Sunday, and hopefully the fixture lives up to the hype!
