‘I’m not going to change’: Ruben Amorim sticks to his guns despite worst Manchester United start in 33 years
Last Updated on 16 September 2025
Manchester United fell to a 3-0 loss at the Etihad Stadium, with Erling Haaland stealing the headling with a brace.
Phil Foden opened the scoring with a header after great work from Doku to get away from Manchester United’s defense.
Erling Haaland doubled the advantage with a clever chipped finish over Altay Bayindir in the second half.
Only fifteen minutes later, the Norwegian found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, again, coolly slotting past him to make it 3-0.
Bryan Mbeumo was unlucky not to score after a special save from Manchester City debutant, Gianluigi Donnarumma but City were too strong for United.
Ruben Amorim has no plans of changing his system despite no hint of improvement
Ruben Amorim defended his philosophy, once again, vehemently refusing to change his system despite a third defeat in five games, this season.
“It’s not a record you should have in Manchester United,” admitted Amorim in the post-match press conference. He added, “There are lot of things that happened during these months, but I’m not going to change.”
It’s a result-oriented industry and Amorim knows that. But with a worse record than any Manchester United manager since World War 2, Amorim’s willing to die by his philosophy rather than change it.
“When I want to change my philosophy, I will change; if not, you have to change the man.”

With four points after four games in the Premier League and an exit in the second round of the Carabao Cup, Manchester United have officially made their worst start to a campaign since the 1992/93 season.
Could Andoni Iraola be the ‘change’ Manchester United so desperately need?
In stark contract to Manchester United, Bournemouth sit pretty in fourth after three wins in four games. Their manager, Andoni Iraola, as per beIN Sports, exercised caution and ‘humbleness’ for the Cherries, after they made their best start to a Premier League campaign.
Their only defeat in the league came at Anfield to the Premier League champions, when Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah scored late on.
Even that defeat was an inspired performance for Bournemouth, having lost five of their first team starters in the summer, after a fantastic 2024/25 campaign.
All their success is down to their manager, Andoni Iraola, and his front-footed, attacking philosophy.
One look at the way the Spaniard sets his teams up and one can’t help but feel that his style of play would suit Old Trafford a lot more than Amorim’s conservative 3-at-the-back.
Should United pull the plug on the Amorim experiment, Iraola could be the man to restore glory days to Manchester United.
But as far as the hierarchy at United are concerned, Amorim’s job is safe, according to Manchester Evening News, at least for the time being.
