WAGatha Christie: The Rooney vs Vardy feud that shook football
Last Updated on 26 February 2026
It began like a throwaway celebrity spat and ended as one of the strangest legal dramas British football has ever produced. What started with a few carefully placed Instagram stories spiralled into a High Court battle and millions in legal fees.
The cultural impact was so absurd it blurred the line between satire and reality. The “Wagatha Christie” saga wasn’t just tabloid fodder. It was a modern morality tale about social media, ego, and the dangers of underestimating someone who quietly knows exactly what they’re doing.
And all that involved two of the best strikers of the last two decades, Jamie Vardy and Wayne Rooney…
The sting operation that exposed football’s most unlikely detective – Coleen Rooney
By 2019, Coleen Rooney had grown increasingly convinced that someone within her inner circle was leaking private Instagram stories to The Sun. Rather than confront anyone directly, she opted for something far more devastating: a methodical sting operation.
Rooney quietly restricted access to her Instagram Stories, blocking every follower except one, Rebekah Vardy’s account. With the trap set, she began posting deliberately fabricated updates designed to be believable but false.
Among them were claims about travelling to Mexico for “gender selection” treatment, plans to return to television, and a flooded basement in her new home. Each story was harmless in isolation. Together, they formed a pattern.
And, eventually, all three appeared in The Sun soon after being posted. The evidence was circumstantial, but overwhelming. On October 9, 2019, Rooney went public.
In a post that instantly broke the internet, she laid out her investigation in calm, forensic detail before delivering the now-immortal conclusion: “It’s………. Rebekah Vardy’s account.”
The reaction was immediate and explosive. Memes flooded social media, journalists scrambled to keep up, and Coleen Rooney had won the public argument in a single stroke. But the real battle was only just beginning.
How the drama spiralled from Instagram to the court
Rather than retreat, Rebekah Vardy escalated matters by launching a libel case, insisting the accusation was false and had caused serious personal and professional harm. The decision proved disastrous.
During the 2022 High Court trial, the case unravelled spectacularly. Vardy’s agent claimed she had accidentally dropped her phone into the North Sea shortly after a court order demanded it be searched, a moment that instantly became shorthand for the trial’s absurdity.
Damning WhatsApp messages were also revealed, including exchanges in which Vardy referred to Rooney in deeply unflattering terms. Ultimately, the decision was ruled in Rooney’s favour, stating that the essence of her accusation was “substantially true.”
The Vardy’s were ordered to pay the majority of legal costs. As per reports, the total bill reportedly exceeded £3 million, far more than any damages that could have been awarded. It went on to inspire a West End play, a Channel 4 dramatization, and a Disney+ documentary
